INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS
Introduction for Participants
You are being invited to participate in a photography workshop series related to the development of digital photographs and stories, part of a project entitled: Regent Park Seniors’ PhotoVoice Project.
Purpose and Objectives
This project is a unique photography workshop series for seniors 65 and older living in Regent Park. The project will culminate with a community-wide photo exhibit and celebration at ArtHeart’s studio to showcase the seniors’ photographs and writings that represent the ‘heart’ of their lives and community. Through the collection of these digital photographs and stories related to family, community and culture this project will focus on enhancing intergenerational knowledge, sharing and connection to community and supporting the promotion of creative endeavors for seniors and for people of all ages.
Participation in this project will involve attending five 3-hour workshops and spending time the instructors and volunteers learning about photography, how to best use a digital camera, and how to best take photos of people, places and things that you consider meaningful to you and your community. You will meet with a group of 8-15 people, including other seniors, youth, and facilitators. You will participate in an intergenerational session with past youth graduates of our photography programs to create portraits of each other. Once the images are collected you will attend a final workshop in which all the digital stories will be put together, presented and analyzed. Discussions in the workshops may be photographed and videotaped and kept for the duration of the project. The tapes of the discussions may be transcribed and portions of any tape may be used in a final report to our project funders and/or in a video featuring the benefits of the project to seniors and the community.
Participants will meet for 5 consecutive Fridays beginning on October 6th and ending on November 3rd. Participants will be required to remain in the workshop for the full 3 hours per workshop which will run from 10 am-1pm. A photo exhibit of your work will take place 2-3 weeks after the last workshop and all participants and their families will be invited and encouraged to attend.
There are minimal risks to you associated with your involvement in this project. These risks may include a lack of anonymity if you choose to have yourself featured in a digital story or a lack of privacy when topics around food, cultural practices and lifestyles are discussed within a group setting.
Documenting the knowledge of our seniors and community members and transmitting cultural knowledge related to your life journeys, family, history and culture has the potential to benefit community members of all ages in Regent Park.
Gathering of Data
Data gathered may include: written stories or descriptions from participants, audio recordings of participants, photos of participants or short videos of participants.
Dissemination of Results
Your name will not appear in any of the disseminated material unless you want your name shared. It is anticipated that the digital stories created in this study will be shared with others in a number of ways.
Registration is on a first come, first serve basis. Spots are limited
