ArtHeart’s special classes for Syrian refugees received some national attention on CBC radio this month. The network program “The Current” aired an interview with the co-founder of the Syrian art project, Ousama Alkhatib, and one of the participants, Haya Abumealek. They spoke to guest-host Laura Lynch about the free art classes that brought together more than a dozen young Syrian newcomers, and how painting helped ease the trauma they have endured. The paintings that were produced over the three-month program last spring formed an exhibit at ArtHeart called “Our Art, Our Stories”. It will be on display again this fall at the Fairlawn Avenue United Church in Toronto.
